Sanctioning

On Stasis

I have had mixed feelings, this week, reading stories about a woman who certainly did express courage in standing up to a leading figure in her political party but did so in ways that seemed, to me, to further entrench the power of an unchecked and, still, largely publicly-traded media sector, referencing its leaders’ increasing political influence repeatedly in jarringly unquestioning ways.

While I do not feel that, in America, the critique – and even serious critique – of male leaders by women should be considered nearly as surprising as this congresswoman’s seems to have been, I wonder whether her stand resulted in a net movement forward for anyone given its reliance on, and even endorsement of, a force in American public affairs arguably at least as harmful as the one she claimed to oppose.

While this person has obviously succeeded in complimenting her base expertly, I believe it needs to be pointed out that there is still a difference between The United States of America and The United States of Media Corporations.
