About

I am a writer, artist, and producer interested in exploring relationships between social justice, environmental health, and individual well-being. I started this blog several years ago because I felt some of my gifts and interests were going underutilized and unshared and that it might be helpful simply to express them.

As a journalist with experience working in some of the most powerful media organizations in the world – and who loved much of this work but grew concerned about the effects of a ratings-based business model on both individual safety and the world – I founded an organization in 2016 to help address problems observed in what were otherwise wonderful environments, filled with good people. But I felt aggressively silenced, regardless of whether I talked about my ideas for improving media company business models, the importance of better centering various forms of oppression in coverage, or about my own personal experience, which I was very hesitant to do; and so this outlet took on a new purpose.

As one question I posed early on was whether a primary means by which a largely unaccountable media sector has maintained what is arguably an improper hegemony over the country since the advent of its alignment with stock market forces may have involved the intentional disregard of women’s rights internally, I was simultaneously glad and somewhat skeptical to see the industry go on to publicly elevate ideas of human equality externally in recent years. Still, I continue to believe the matter of media sector accountability, and the industry’s relatedness to stock market forces within a ratings-based business model, need to be addressed.

Having selected my website’s domain some years ago, I’ve attempted during quarantine to explore and express the meaning of my name: Warrior Pearl Storyteller – not by opposing any person or organization, but by lovingly and creatively standing up to observed norms that may unnecessarily oppose progress for individuals and societies. And I hope my 2020 book, Gertrude Saves Her World, embodies this goal.

As a person from Plymouth, Massachusetts, I am grateful to have felt encouraged over many years to learn about and celebrate ideas of welcome, persistence, and freedom, including ways in which these can better be cherished in my role as citizen. More than anything, I hope to focus in my website on the simple expression of qualities like creativity, candor, and courage.
